Someone (was it William Wordsworth?) once described the Lake District as The Most Beautiful Corner of England... and I have to agree. It's the place where I was brought up and it's the place I return to, time and again.
On this website you'll find information about A Place in the Lakes, a bolt-hole in the Lake District National Park which is ideal for short breaks and weekends away. It's not on any booking sites, but it is available to friends (if you're reading this that's YOU!).
Here you'll also find pages listing the best things to see and do on a visit to the Lake District, along with great places to eat and drink, all tried and tested by me (I've done the research for you!). So have a browse and give me a call if you'd like to stay.

LOCATION
The hamlet of Backbarrow is in the Lake District National Park at the southern tip of Windermere. To the north are the villages of Ambleside, Windermere, Coniston, Hawkshead and Grasmere; to the south is Cartmel, the market town of Ulverston and the coastal sands of Morecambe Bay.
Whether you come to the Lake District for high level walking or low level rambles; to sail, to cycle or to unwind, enjoy the scenery and breathe clean air, this apartment is a great place to stay.
Breathe clean air
Connect with nature
See somewhere new
There's a huge choice of restaurants, pubs and cafes in the nearby villages (see my recommendations on the 'Places to Eat & Drink' page). If you're celebrating something really special there are three Michelin starred restaurants in the area, or if you're eating in, the shops in the market town of Ulverston are on hand, including the superb Booth's, known locally as the Waitrose of the North!
THE PLACE
Built in 2019 on the banks of the river Leven, the Ironworks Building has traditional Lakeland Stone looks on the outside with modern comforts on the inside. It's on a private road with no through-traffic, so the area is very quiet.
The apartment has one double bedroom so it's ideal for two people. Plus, there's a sofa bed in the living room, making the place great for two single visitors too. There's a fully equipped kitchen, open plan living room, full-size bathroom and two outside spaces.
High speed internet will keep you connected... or just switch it off for the full 'peace and quiet' experience.
The living room
The apartment is on the ground floor, is double-aspect and has new furnishings & equipment throughout.
The living room has a sofa bed, armchair, radio, free-to-air TV and high speed wifi.
Floor to ceiling windows and doors lead to your own outdoor space with views of the river below.
The bathroom
The bathroom has a full size bath with rain shower, slate tiling, basin, towels, soaps and a mirrored cabinet.
The kitchen
Everything you're likely to need is here, from the induction hob and oven, down to the teaspoons.
Other appliances include a fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, kettle and toaster.
The kitchen is full of natural light and leads out onto its own west-facing outdoor space.
Outside
There are two outside spaces: one is off the kitchen; the other is off the living room and has a table & chairs.
The bedroom
The bedroom has a new double bed, mattress, duvet, linens, bedside lighting and cabinets.
Built-in wardrobes with plenty of shelves and hangers provide more than enough storage space.
The Ironworks Building is in a very quiet area and all the windows are double glazed, so you'll sleep well!
Parking
There's free onsite parking for one car in your own numbered space (see the map on the 'Your Stay' page).
